Please Stand for the Pledge…

I love little kids…love how their minds work…love the depth and innocence of their thought process…
Case in point…youngest granddaughter…age three and a half…recently asked if she could say the pledge…here’s how it went…
God my Father…I know what to do better than my Grandma…Amen…
Funny thing…no one argued with her…or considered that she might be talking about her other grandmother…geez…
This is the same child who…after weeks of singing…Grandma Got Run Over By a REINDEER…(her emphasis)…was panicky on Christmas morning to see if Gran Gran…AKA…the other grandmother…got run over during the night…
Today’s questions were…why do acorns wear hats…and…why does she have some boy toes and some girl toes…
I might attempt the question about the acorns…I’m not real sure about the toes…I think I’ll let her other grandmother answer that one…since she made it through reindeer night unscathed…

Mistletoe Kisses…

Today’s blog has been hijacked…by a silly…sappy Christmas story I wrote a few years ago…hey…don’t laugh…I think Hallmark will be calling me for the movie rights…right after I get off the phone with Oprah…
Mistletoe Kisses
“Nunh nuh…I ain’t gonna do it…you do it!”
“I double dog dare you!” Carl snarled back.
“Awww…why did you have to go and double dog me? Now I gotta…it’s the code…”
Rod got closer and reluctantly tapped Jill on the shoulder…turning around…her face was directly in his…making the dreaded double dog dared mistletoe kiss a moot point. It happened in spite of him. Maybe it was meant to be…but 12 year-old Rod wasn’t thinking so deeply…he was making a hasty retreat as kids and grown-ups alike were rolling with laughter and 15 year-old Jill stood there with her recently kissed mouth standing wide open.
The year was 1965 and Rod and Jill had just exchanged what would become their annual mistletoe kiss…every year…same time…same place…Christmas Eve at the neighborhood party.
Truth be known…very quickly Rod didn’t need a double dare to kiss Jill…but he egged one on…just to save face. Jill on the other hand…thought very little about Rod…whether he was stealing a kiss or not…he was just a kid, after all.
Years quickly passed and Jill was away at college…but came home every year for the holidays…that mistletoe kiss was now a joke between them. Soon enough Rod left home as well…but he always made it home by Christmas Eve.
Rod’s wife didn’t complain too much when he sought a pregnant Jill out for a holiday smooch…it was tradition after all.
And so the tradition continued through thick and thin…until that year in 2007…Jill came home to spend her first widowed holiday with her parents…not exactly what she had planned…in fact…when the time came…she couldn’t force herself to attend the festivities and insisted that her parents leave her to her own memories…no point ruining everyone’s evening.
Sitting in front of a simmering fire…Jill was startled by the doorbell…who could that be…everyone was at the neighborhood party…everyone except…Rod.
Sitting before the fire…Jill suddenly poured her heart out to Rod…everything she’d been holding back since her husband’s illness and death six months ago came tumbling out.
Rod reached over and pulled her to him…wiping her tears and holding her close…
Finding her composure…Jill softly asked, “Won’t your wife be wondering where you’ve gotten to?”
“Naw…she gave that up when she left me last year…right after the holidays…”
Their eyes met…he pulled her chin toward his…and did what he’d longed to do for years…their first kiss without mistletoe.

This Day in History…Thirty-One Years Ago…

Thirty-one years ago today…I finished my Christmas shopping early…I think…no…I know…it’s the last time that has happened…and there’s no way it’s happening this year…unless…I just don’t get anything for anybody…hmmm…
Thirty-one years ago today…my once-husband was making a stable for our Nativity Set…he didn’t get finished…
Thirty-one years ago today…I washed my hair and shaved my legs…and had a contraction getting out of the tub…
Thirty-one years ago today…Adam got his sight back on Little House on the Prairie…I’d looked forward to the show for weeks…I missed it…
Thirty-one years ago today…at age 18 months…my oldest daughter spent the night with her paternal grandmother for the first…and probably only time…
Thirty-one years ago today…John Lennon was killed…by Mark David Chapman…at almost the exact moment that…drumroll please…
Thirty-one years ago today…I gave birth…to my youngest beautiful baby girl…45 minutes after arriving at the hospital…on her due date...no less...
While…I’m not a proponent of living in the past…there are certain days that make me nostalgic…my daughters’ birthdays are tops on that list…
Funny…I used to be sad on their birthdays because I was disappointed that I hadn’t given them…the American Dream life that I had planned…surprisingly…it was my oldest daughter…not Bertha…who explained to me…that that was my dream for them…and that although things could have been different…they weren’t…but…they were loved…and well cared for…and grew up just fine…
Honestly…I think that child has a Bertha of her own…she’s pretty wise…hey...they both are...what can I say...
So...I’m no longer sad on their birthdays…I cherish the memories…each and every one of them…I even remember what the baby was wearing when she was born…
Oh…and she now has the Nativity Set…it only seemed appropriate…

Treeless in Alabama...

“To tree or not to tree?” That is the question. For the last five years or so, my answer has been “NOT!” Now don’t get excited. I’m not a humbug, nor am I depressed, sick, decrepit, or even broke.
The events that turned me into the old lady down the street without a Christmas tree would hardly make a touching Hallmark commercial, let alone a holiday movie. Instead, a lowly business trip nestled right in the midst of tree trimming time followed by holiday travel brought my tinsel strewing days to a halt. There just wasn’t time.
My daughters were appalled. Wasn’t I the one who always spent weeks decorating as many as three Christmas trees? Wasn’t I the one who burned enough twinkle lights to ensure the holiday bonuses of the entire electric company many years running? Wasn’t I the one who taught them the meaning of Christmas and family and life?
The thoughts of me being treeless would ruin Christmas. I assured them I was treeless not homeless. It would be okay it was just for one year—next year I would reclaim my decoration diva title.
I lied.
I meant to keep my promise. A heartfelt vow to one’s children should always be kept…but let’s face it…they were grown with their own trees…Santa wasn’t looking for a place to stow gifts…for Pete’s sakes, I didn’t even have a chimney for Santa to squeeze down anymore.
Besides, in all honesty, not having a tree had been liberating. There was no driving home from the nursery with a ten-foot evergreen tethered precariously on top of my car. There was no fighting with gnarled garland. There were no lights that gave up the ghost as soon as the ornaments were hung. There were no spiky needles in the carpet for the next six months…and Miracle on Cotton Bay Drive…I was happy. I had plenty of holiday spirit, devoured mounds of delicious goodies (some of which I’m still sporting) and gave and received delightful gifts without so much as a Norfolk Pine in the living room.
When the holidays rolled around again reawakening my daughters’ visions of sugarplums and Mama’s Christmas tree, my heart knew it wasn’t going to happen but I didn’t have a business excuse that year. What I did have was a Labrador retriever whose tail could fell a tree swifter than Paul Bunyan’s ax and a cat to egg her on. So like millions of ill prepared schoolchildren the world over…I blamed it on the dog.
It’s doubtful they bought the excuse and I didn’t offer the empty promise of next year…we all knew it was over.
The excuses changed with each ensuing year…becoming more or less an exercise in creativity. My current house doesn’t have enough outlets…hey, that’s the honest truth and I’m not giving up my heating pad for twinkle lights!
What I’ve learned in my years of being treeless is that the true meaning of Christmas is not ten-foot tall and smells of spruce. The true meaning of Christmas is love and family and sharing and Peace on Earth, Good Will to Men.
As I’m learning to lead with my heart, my newfound freedom is spilling over into other areas of my life. I’m picking and choosing based on today’s pleasure not yesterday’s memories…knowing that I have the prerogative to change…as I choose. In fact, I have a granddaughter now and maybe, just maybe, next year Grammy will put up a tree…but then again…she’s little…she won’t know the difference…why start a new tradition…

PS…I have actually had a tree every year since I wrote this piece in 2006…I now have two granddaughters to decorate for…but this year…they are coming after Christmas…and I’m answering that famous question…NOT!

PSS…I shared this story during my recent visit with Alpha Delta Kappa…glad to say that they seemed to enjoy Bertha…as much as I enjoyed them…Hats off to educators!

I’m Dreaming of a Blue Christmas…Not…

Seems everywhere I turn…someone is playing Christmas music…well…it is the season…but lots of it is just plain tragic…love gone bad…mama going to meet Jesus…it makes me sad to listen to it…so…unless forced to…tied…gagged and bound…I don’t…I have changed radio stations in the past because they only played Christmas music seemingly from Labor Day through New Year’s…
Personally…I like the happy songs…the ones that make you feel good all over…like Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer…now who wouldn’t feel good while listening to that…my whole family loves it…even Grandma…
Some of my other funny favs include…
I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas…hello…Hippo Hero…glad you’re a vegetarian…
The Chimney Song…there’s something stuck up in the chimney…and I don’t know what it is…makes me glad I don’t have a fireplace…
The Restroom Door Said Gentlemen…now…I can’t sit in comfort and joy…love the play on words…who thinks up these songs…oh…Bob Rivers…
Santa Claus in Watching You…remember when Clyde the camel replaced Rudolph who dislocated his hip in a twist contest…
I know…I know…I’m weird…but…to me…sad Christmas music is like somebody telling me that I’ve gained weight…and we all know how that feels…okay…some of you don’t know…so let me just tell you…it feels crummy…I am aware of the weight…hello…I have a mirror…
Same difference with the songs…I’m aware of all the sad things that happen around Christmas…people who are lonely…people who are sad over the loss of a loved one…I don’t want to be reminded of it in my songs…
I want peace on earth…good will to men and women…I want hope…and love…and a warm fuzzy feeling…
Somehow…crazy mixed up Christmas songs do that for me…but…even them in small doses…
Bertha says that’s a part of living my truth…finding what makes me happy and embracing it…finding what makes me sad…and letting it go…whether it’s thoughts or music…it really doesn’t matter…
So…I listen to a station that plays the occasional Christmas song…and if it’s one that brings blue thoughts…I turn down the volume…easy peasy…

All I Want for Christmas…Is a Day on the Couch…

I’m sort of a sucker for sappy Christmas movies…and they’ve already started…so…I’ve spent a rainy Sunday afternoon…on the sofa…with a blanket…watching movies…
That almost sounds decadent…there are so many things I could have been doing…should have been doing…or…are there…
Sometimes…what I really need is a break…a time to dream…to believe in the magic of Christmas…in the magic of love…of family…of home…it’s just that I don’t always give myself permission to do it…
So…today…I did…I gave myself full permission…nothing else I needed to do…it’s a short work week…all I really had to do was…just lie there…glued to the TV…
The funny thing is…once I sincerely gave myself permission to omit the to-do list…it no longer seemed so daunting…and little by little…things started to happen during commercials…soup was made…the kitchen was cleaned…the floor was swept…
And I’ve still kept up with the movies…and yes…Christmas is saved every time…just in the Nick of time…by Santa’s daughter…that seemed to be a theme for the day…
Now…the blog is written…the coffee pot is ready for an early morning wake-me-up…and I’m going back to the sofa…until heading for bed…couldn’t have asked for a better afternoon…
